Winemaking

Grapes were harvested over a period of a month from mid-September to mid-October for optimal ripeness according to variety and elevation.  The grapes were then destemmed into tank for daily pumpovers and an 18 day maceration period.  

Wild yeast primary fermentation in tank (Syrah & Viognier co-fermented) followed by racking in to a combination of foudre, neutral barrique and tank for malolactic and ageing for 10 months.

Vineyards

70% SYRAH

25% PETITE SIRAH

5% VIOGNIER


Vineyards are all located in Mendocino County - a mix of ancient alluvial soils and volcanic materials at elevations ranging from 700- 1200 feet.  

McDowell Valley AVA, known for thriving Rhone varieties, is the source for much of the blend, including spectacular old vine Syrah (95 years).  This area is sloped bench land at elevations as high as 1,000 feet above sea level overlooking the Russian River to the west.  

Vineyards are also located in  Yorkville Highlands AVA - a wild, on-the- fringe area where yields are low, elevations are high, diurnal shifts are extreme.
